History and
"Things To Do" Links
Located directly to
the south of Ponce De Leon
Inlet, New Smyrna Beach serves as the
gateway to the historic and picturesque Indian River Intracoastal Waterway
and 13 miles of Atlantic Coast beach reputed to be the "World's Safest
Bathing Beach." The area is 32 square miles and its population is
19,000.
New Smyrna Beach is one of the
oldest settlements in North America. Dated back in 1513 the Spanish fleet
invaded first the region, leaving behind such beautiful historic places
like St. Augustine. In 1767 a group of 1.500 Greeks, Italians and
Minorcans, who comprised the single largest colony ever to come to
America, founded New Smyrna Beach to honor the birthplace of the leader's
wife, Smyrna, Asia Minor.
Rich in history and sunshine, New Smyrna
Beach is often referred to as "Florida's Original Theme Park." Bound at
the south side of the island by the 57,000-acre Canaveral National
Seashore Park and at the north end by Smyrna Dunes Park, with its 1.5 mile
boardwalk loop around the Inlet area, nature comes alive here. Water
sports abound, with some of the best surfing in the area and fishing that
is absolutely first-class. Palm trees border Flagler Avenue, a true
seaside beach street lined with quaint boutiques, surf shops and
restaurants Historic Canal Street in downtown New Smyrna Beach has
benefited from a community redevelopment plan that has revived the
district while retaining its old town charm.
New Smyrna Beach's central location makes
it an ideal place for vacationing! Daytona
Beach, with its outlet stores, malls,
International Speedway and Greyhound Dog Racing, is just 15 miles away.
Kennedy Space Center is 45 miles south. The
historic city of St. Augustine is a
pleasant short trip, just over one hour's drive. Walt Disney
World, Sea World, Universal Studios, and the many family
attractions of the Orlando area are less than an hour's drive to the
west.
